This morning an abandoned Tahoe was found in the Chequamagon Bay. At approximately 3:00 Am last night someone tried to go straight north at an intersection where that isn’t an option.
Here’s a satellite image of the intersection. The vehicle was headed north on Sanborn Avenue, blew through the intersection, up an embankment, over some trees, and right into Lake Superior about 50 ft below. They must have been FLYIN’. Rough estimate, they flew a good 125-150’.
And here’s the shots you want to see. Said Tahoe in said body of water. These pictures were shared on the Ashland Small Town News FB page. A few people in the comments have joked that it’s a bit early to be driving out on the ice lol.
And evidence of why you get huge fines when you dump a car into water. Look at that trail of oil. Probably doesn’t help that the oil pan was most likely damaged when they hit the embankment. Also notice that in this shot you can’t even see the road. That’s a walking path. Which is why the embankment is there. To prevent cars from crashing into people on the walking path.
As I mentioned the car was abandoned when found. So no report of anyone being injured in the crash. I’m sure once the police get the VIN, an plate # they’ll be arresting someone. I do plan on running over there in the morning to check it out myself. Gonna bring the boy with me and show in first hand how dangerous drunk driving is, as that’s a pretty safe assumption of what happened here. Hopefully get a video to share with you guys as well. I couldn’t do it today cuz I was working.

Stolen, I’d wager.
I wonder how the liability for the enviro damage works there... does the state try to pin it on the owner for not securing the vehicle?
Or, does JK Simmons step in and make it all OK?

Aww that poor GMT400 Tahoe

That is an impressive leap. Odd that they made it out the back door.

That was my first instinct, it it’s also happened shortly after bar close (2:30am) so it’s just as likely that the guy didn’t want add a DUI the the list of charges he’s going to get.

How did two people end up posting this? Is this quote a reference I don’t get? I tried googling it and got nothing.

I’m thinking the frame bent enough to stop the front doors from opening, or at least make it harder.

It’s also possible that they went out that door because it’s the closest to land.

Oooh yeah

Hitting water at a shallow angle at that speed could easily have done so. Could have even broken a window so I'm surprised I don’t see much damage.

Keep us posted— even blotto the guy (and I’d be certain this is a guy) would surely know that the VIN was going to give him away.
I guess he waded to shore? Have no idea how cold it is, but having followed some college FB teams around your neck-of-the-woods in October a few years back? I’d assume it was cold enough to make his stipples nick out. My coldest recent winter was an early October snow squall in Appleton. From the stands. Of a football game. don’t ask.

Definitely drunk driving, abandoned to avoid DUI.

That video is still... awesome. I love the roostertail of water shooting up.

Last time I jumped into Lake Superior in October I, and I’m not exaggerating, thought I was gonna die. There’s a trail north of here that leads to a cliff that’s great for diving. A huge areas of 20ft deep water under little 20ft cliffs. Me an a few buddies all did it. We all regretted it.

Its from that famous Bugatti Veyron lake crash incident back in 2009 - also the source of the “pretty sure its a Lambo, dude” meme. Owner intentionally crashed his car into a lake for insurance fraud, tried to claim he was started by a pelican.

A few years ago three guys in some small car came at an extreme rate of speed and hit the jersey
wall at the end of this road. This
is an overpass, and o
n the other side of the impact point is a wall that drops down about 30 feet to the road behind a restaurant. The guys hit the wall, flipped over and fell down against the restaurant, and the car caught on fire
. Yeah, they all died.

VIN gives you away, but it probably gives them a much better shot at avoiding a DUI.

Red Bull make give you wings but if you add vodka then you only fly like a turkey.
One wonders whether this is a drunk accident or a drunk suicide attempt that ended up being a drunk accident...on the other hand, no-one yet knows it the driver made it to shore.

I -can’t- believe there’s 38 responses posted including 3 references to the “ Pelican made me do it” and no one has pointed out the “KWIK TRIP” convenience store on the corner... It was a kwi k trip and and a sudden stop I’ll bet! (Glad the fool lived, but the police are going to catch up with him, either at home or at the hospital )

Also I just noticed the Kwik Trip isn’t even there. I guess Google hasn’t updated their photos of Ashland Wo for a few years. It’s there on Apple Maps.

I’m pretty sure this happens when someone is trying to view a lunar eclipse while driving. It’s hard to notice little things like roads ending when you are looking up at the stars.
